WC5 – Safety
Work Breakdown Structure
Safety is a cornerstone of the NA-CONS project. Work Category 5 (WC5) ensures that the consolidation of CERN’s North Area meets the highest standards of fire protection, radiation protection, occupational safety and regulatory compliance. The work spans the design and implementation of new safety systems, operational support during construction and installation, and the preparation of the documentation required to safely operate the upgraded facilities.
WC5 is organised into four work packages, covering technical safety systems, radiation protection, occupational safety and the overall safety documentation that accompanies the project throughout its lifecycle:
WP 5.1: Fire Safety & Access
WP 5.2: Radiation Protection
WP 5.3: Occupation Safety
WP 5.4: Safety File

WP5.1 Fire Safety and Access Systems
WP 5.1 – Fire Safety & Access enhances fire protection and safe access throughout CERN’s North Area by upgrading fire detection, suppression and evacuation systems, improving compartmentalisation, and modernising access control and gas detection infrastructure. It covers the full lifecycle from design and integration to installation, commissioning and, where required, dismantling of existing systems.

WP5.2 Radiation Protection
WP 5.2 – Radiation Protection ensures that the North Area continues to meet CERN’s radiation protection requirements by upgrading monitoring systems, consolidating buffer zones, supporting operational activities, and carrying out studies to optimise shielding and improve the radiological performance of facilities and equipment.

WP5.3 Occupational Safety
WP 5.3 – Occupational Safety coordinates occupational safety activities across the North Area consolidation, with a particular focus on YETS planning and execution. It interfaces closely with WC6 for the management of VICs, co-activities and mitigation measures, and with HSE to ensure compliance and safe operations. The work package also delivers safety studies, diagnostics, inspections and reports, including the FIRIA study for TDC2/TCC2 and the ongoing seismic assessment of the shielding, supporting the safe delivery of North Area operations.

WP5.4 Safety File
WP 5.4 – Safety File prepares and maintains the North Area Safety File, one of the project’s key safety deliverables. Bringing together descriptive, demonstrative and operational documentation, as well as records of operational experience, it provides the evidence required for the handover to the authorities under the Tripartite Agreement ahead of LS3.
