
Project Scope
The North Area Consolidation (NA-CONS) is planned to be carried out in two Phases (Phase I and Phase II), both with well-defined perimeters of action to guarantee the reliability of the North Area (NA), to bring it into conformity with safety standards, and to improve its beam instrumentation, preceded by a preliminary period. This phase is called pre-Phase I, in which some urgent actions have been undertaken to guarantee a stable aProject scope
The North Area Consolidation (NA-CONS) project is being delivered in two implementation phases, preceded by a preparatory period known as Pre-Phase I. This staged approach allows the project to address the most critical infrastructure first while balancing the available resources and maintaining North Area operation throughout the programme.
The project follows a building-by-building consolidation strategy, beginning with BA80, the upstream auxiliary building where the secondary beams are produced. Because many essential systems are concentrated in this area, work in BA80 has the greatest impact on the overall reliability of the North Area. Its consolidation is therefore carried out together with the renovation of the TT20 transfer line and the associated TDC2/TCC2 infrastructure, allowing these highly interconnected systems to be upgraded during the same shutdown period.nd reliable beam operation until Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). The Phasing of the project is required in order to cope with the resource availability and a possible post-LS3 adjustment if needed.
Pre-Phase I (2019 – 2021)
The preparatory phase focused on studies and urgent interventions required to ensure safe and reliable operation until Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). Early activities included initial civil engineering works, technical service upgrades, safety improvements and the first consolidation actions on beam instrumentation and power converters.
Phase I (2021 – 2030)
Phase I covers the period from the end of LS2 to the completion of LS3. It concentrates on the primary beam area centred on BA80, TT20 and TDC2/TCC2, where interventions provide the greatest benefit for the North Area as a whole.
The main objectives are:
- deliver approximately 95% of the planned safety improvements, including fire detection and protection systems; consolidate BA80 infrastructure, technical services, electrical systems, cooling, ventilation and power converters; modernise beam instrumentation and beam-intercepting devices; replace ageing infrastructure in TT20 and TDC2, including irradiated cables, electrical distribution and vacuum equipment.

By completing the consolidation of the primary beam area, Phase I restores the reliability of the systems serving a large fraction of the North Area beam lines and experiments.
Phase II (2030 – )
Phase II completes the consolidation programme by extending the upgrades to the remaining North Area infrastructure. It focuses on BA81 and BA82, the experimental halls and the remaining beam-line infrastructure not addressed during Phase I.
Its objectives include:
- completing civil the remaining engineering works.
- consolidating technical services, cooling, ventilation, electrical distribution and power converters in BA81 and BA82.
- completing the remaining upgrades to beam instrumentation and beam-intercepting devices.
- delivering the final safety improvements, primarily related to fire protection.
Together, the two implementation phases provide a fully consolidated North Area infrastructure that meets modern operational and safety requirements.
Project Roadmap
The roadmap provides an overview of the project’s implementation over time, highlighting the main activities carried out during each shutdown period. It illustrates how the different technical domains progress in parallel while concentrating the most disruptive interventions during the Long Shutdowns (LS), when access to the accelerator complex is available. Activities that can be performed with a limited impact on operation are scheduled during the Year-End Technical Stops (YETS), allowing the consolidation programme to advance between major shutdowns.
