WC4 – Infrastructure and Services
Work Breakdown Structure
The Infrastructure & Services Coordinator oversees all infrastructure-related activities within Work Category 4 (WC4) of the NA-CONS Project. WC4 comprises eight work packages covering the technical infrastructure that underpins the North Area, from civil engineering and utilities to electrical, cryogenic and network services. The coordinator manages activities include procurement and installation to commissioning, ensuring that the different work packages progress in a coordinated way and reach their planned milestones.
The role requires close collaboration with the Work Package Leaders, Project Management and numerous CERN services. Through regular communication and coordination across WC4, the coordinator helps align activities, manage interfaces between the different technical domains and ensure that the infrastructure is delivered as an integrated system. The WC4 leader is a member of the NA-CONS Project team and actively participates in Project Board meetings.

WP4.1 Civil Engineering
WP 4.1 – Civil Engineering covers the refurbishment and construction of the civil engineering infrastructure across the North Area. The work package is organised into four main areas: the experimental halls and transfer tunnels, the surface buildings (BA, BB and BG), general civil engineering works, and the construction of the fifth cell in CT2. Activities range from conceptual design and building works to the installation of false floors, pipe rerouting, doors and fences, providing the infrastructure needed to support future operation of the experimental areas.

WP4.2 False Floors and Baracks, User Areas
WP 4.2 – False Floors, Barracks and User Areas focuses on refurbishing and adapting the infrastructure that supports the day-to-day operation of the North Area. The work package covers the renovation of false floors, user and counting-room barracks, the mechanical workshop, storage and user areas, as well as shielding infrastructure. Activities include the refurbishment and replacement of existing installations, the reconfiguration and relocation of equipment, the separation of the BI-Gas distribution barrack, and the installation of new support and shielding structures where required.

WP4.3 Gas Distribution and Controls
WP 4.3 – Gas Distribution and Controls encompasses the consolidation of the gas supply, distribution and control systems serving the North Area experiments. The work package includes the refurbishment of gas buildings and gas-mixing areas, the upgrade of gas supply systems for individual experimental facilities, and the modernisation of gas control and supervision systems. Activities span the full project lifecycle, from functional analysis and design to procurement, assembly, installation, commissioning, equipment configuration and safety inspections.

WP4.4 Cooling & Ventilation
WP 4.4 – Cooling and Ventilation focuses on the consolidation of the cooling, ventilation, compressed-air and heating infrastructure serving the North Area. The work package includes upgrades to the primary, demineralised and chilled water systems, ventilation systems for underground areas, technical galleries, experimental halls and gas buildings, the compressed-air distribution network, and the heating systems serving the buildings and experimental halls. Activities include the replacement of distribution pipes and heating components, as well as the installation and commissioning of the upgraded infrastructure.

WP4.5 Electrical and Fiber Infrastructure
WP 4.5 – Electrical and Fibre Infrastructure comprises the consolidation of the electrical and fibre-optic infrastructure serving the North Area. The work package includes upgrades to the pulsed network supplying the magnets, the stable network serving general users, the 3.3 kV power supply for the cryogenic installations, the secured network, as well as supervision systems, AUG and UPS. It also includes the refurbishment of general electrical services, modifications to the DC cabling for both machine and users’ infrastructure, the replacement of irradiated DC cables, and the modernisation of the fibre-optic infrastructure, including the DORFS system.

WP4.6 Cryogenics
WP 4.6 – Cryogenics is dedicated to the refurbishment and modernisation of the cryogenic infrastructure serving the North Area. The work package includes the replacement and qualification of centrifugal pumps, upgrades to liquid helium (LHe) level gauges and helium gas volume measurement systems, the refurbishment of cryogenic control racks and piston compressor systems, and the modernisation of electrical and instrumentation equipment. Activities also include the development of test benches, the replacement of obsolete control racks, and the refurbishment of helium cold boxes.

WP4.7 Cranes and Lifts
WP 4.7 – Cranes and Lifts focuses on the refurbishment of the lifting infrastructure serving the North Area. The work package includes the renovation of overhead cranes in the experimental halls and underground caverns, together with the modernisation of personnel lifts to ensure their reliable and safe operation.The WP 4.7 consists of the renovation of overhead cranes in experimental halls and caverns as well as the renovation of personal lifts.

WP4.8 Communication Network
WP 4.8 – Telecom and Network addresses the consolidation of the telecommunications and network infrastructure serving the North Area. The work package includes extending mobile and TETRA coverage, expanding the WiFi network, and implementing network and data infrastructure requests. Together, these upgrades provide the robust communication and connectivity required for the reliable operation of the North Area and contribute to the safe operation of its facilities.he consolidation of the mobile/Tetra coverage, the WiFi-network and provision according to network requests.
