WC3 – Beam Line Engineering

Work Breakdown Structure

Work Category 3 (WC3) covers the engineering and consolidation of the systems that make up the North Area beamlines. It brings together work on beam instrumentation, beam-intercepting devices, vacuum systems, support structures and beamline configuration.

The activities range from the consolidation of equipment in the primary and secondary areas to targets, collimators, absorbers and converters, as well as the supports and controls required for their operation. WC3 also coordinates beamline configuration studies and the associated technical documentation.

WC3 comprises five Work Packages (WP):

  • WP 3.1 : Beamline Instrumentation
  • WP 3.2 : Beam Intercepting Devices
  • WP 3.3 : Vacuum
  • WP 3.4 : Support Structures
  • WP 3.5 : Beamline Configuration

WP 3.1 Beam Instrumentation

WP 3.1 – Beam Instrumentation aims to improve the operability, reliability, availability, maintainability and safety of the North Area beam instrumentation through a dedicated consolidation programme. Activities in the primary and secondary areas include the renewal and development of beam intensity, position and loss monitors, Cherenkov detectors and readout systems, together with the technical support required for their implementation and testing.

WP 3.2 Beam-intercepting Devices

WP 3.2 – Beam-intercepting devices brings together the consolidation of the beam-intercepting devices used across the North Area. These include dumps, absorbers and converters, different types of collimators, and the T2, T4 and T6 targets. The work also includes the associated mechatronics, controls and monitoring required for their operation.

WP 3.3 Vacuum

WP 3.3 – Vacuum covers the consolidation of the vacuum systems across the primary and secondary areas of the North Area. In the primary areas, this includes pumps and controllers, valves, gauges, vacuum chambers, windows and control cabling.

For the secondary areas, the work covers vacuum control and pumping systems, hardware and spares, as well as the design, integration and sectorisation of the vacuum system.

WP 3.4 Support Structures

WP 3.4 – Support structures addresses the consolidation of the support structures used throughout the North Area beamlines. This includes jacks and non-motorised supports for a range of beamline components, together with the associated control and monitoring systems.equired.

WP 3.5 Beamline Configuration

WP 3.5 – Beamline Configuration coordinates the current and future configuration of the North Area beamlines. It assesses the operational impact of planned changes, maps beamline configurations and provides input to user requirements. The work also ensures that these requirements and operational impacts are consistently documented.
